Lectio Divina
Lectio Divina or divine reading represents an ancient Christian practice of praying with Scripture. It became a regular practice in monasteries by the time of St. Benedict in the 6th century.
The next online meeting is this evening 5th May 2025. It will be led by Joop Brouwer. To find out more or receive a link to the session, please email Nigel Stewart at: n.stewart@lancaster.ac.uk.
During Lectio Divina, the practitioner listens to a text from the Scriptures with the “ear of the heart”. The method of Lectio Divina includes moments of reading, reflecting on, responding to and resting in the Word of God. The interaction among the moments is dynamic and the movement through the moments follows the spontaneous prompting of the Holy Spirit.
Lectio Divina cultivates contemplative prayer; it is a participatory, active practice that uses thoughts, feelings and images to enter into a conversation with God.
The group practice of Lectio Divina is organised by Nigel Stewart and led by Joop Brouwer. It typically takes place on the first Monday of every month Everybody is welcome to join, either as a one off or on a more regular basis. No previous experience or knowledge of the Scriptures is necessary. Once learned, Lectio Divina can also be practiced individually at any time or place.
During lockdown we met via Zoom. This proved to be so effective that, at least for the present, we prefer to meet online rather than in-person. Join us to see how modern technology gives added value to this ancient practice of praying and meditating on scripture. If you are interested in joining this live online interactive session, please email Nigel Stewart at: n.stewart@lancaster.ac.uk. Nigel will then email you a link to the next meeting.
