Mothers’ Union

Mothers’ Union is a world-wide Anglican organisation with more than 4 million members in 80 countries worldwide. Its purpose is to be concerned with all aspects of Christian family life.

Membership of Mothers’ Union is open to all (both male and female) who have been baptised in the name of the Trinity and who support the aims and objectives. This includes people of any age and status – young, middle aged or elderly; single, married or divorced.

The aim of the Mothers’ Union is the advancement of the Christian faith in the sphere of marriage and family life. Its objectives are:

  • Promoting and supporting married life
  • Encouraging and equipping parents in their role to develop the faith of their child
  • Being a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service
  • Campaigning for conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children
  • Helping those whose family life has met with adversity

The backbone of the Mothers’ Union is its worldwide network of volunteers. Whatever their individual backgrounds, members are related by a commitment to marriage and family. They give their time generously to help others, whether by running local projects, supporting international campaigns, or fundraising.

The MU also employs over 300 paid workers around the world, providing vital leadership for community-based projects. They enable people to gain essential skills, develop and encourage sustainable self-help projects, and run training seminars for local MU members and the wider community.

Nearer to home the MU is involved in various projects such as running creches in prisons, contact centres for divided families, and parenting courses. The ‘Away From It All’ scheme offers holidays to families and individuals who need a break and would not otherwise be able to take one. The caravan at Morecambe is used by families, referred by MU members, clergy and health professionals, who can have a holiday at a very low cost.

The MU is also involved in campaigning and lobbying on a number of worldwide issues such as parental rights, gender equality, international debt relief, child poverty, the commercialisation and sexualisation of children, female genital mutilation practices and maternity rights.

The Priory MU meets monthly from September to May. Meetings are usually on the second Thursday of the month at 2.00 pm or 7.30 pm in the Refectory.

You do not need to be able to attend every meeting. Your membership means that you support a particular way of life and you become part of the worldwide fellowship. Your subscription helps to support the work of the Mothers’ Union throughout the world.

Anyone is welcome to come along to a meeting at any time.
